Send an emergency notification

An emergency notification reaches more people than a normal update. Use it only for health and safety, for example a boil-water notice or a dangerous road closure.

Who an emergency reaches

  • Every resident in the area who follows the topics. With Include everyone in the marked area, every resident in the area.
  • Residents who want emergency messages only.
  • Residents who have not opted in, if your city's records have a phone number or address for them. The report counts these as sent under the emergency exception.

Residents with "Emergency alerts right away" turned on get it at once. Their "how often" choice does not delay it.

Phone calls for emergencies go out at once, at any hour.

Tip: every resident follows the Emergency Information topic. To reach every resident in the area, pick that topic or select Include everyone in the marked area.

Send an emergency

  1. On the Review and send step, select Send now.
  2. Select This is an emergency notification.
  3. Citizen Loop can check the message. If it does not look like a health or safety emergency, a dialog opens. Select I understand this reaches residents who did not opt in, then Mark as emergency.
  4. The send button turns red. Select it and confirm.

You can mark only Send now updates as emergencies. Scheduled and newsletter updates are never emergencies.

Use emergencies with care

Too many alerts teach residents to ignore them.
